Rebecca And The Sunnybrook Farmers - Birth (us 1969 psychedelia)

Rebecca and the Sunnybrook Farmers - Birth (us 1969)

Formed: Pittsburgh, PA, United States
Disbanded: January 1, 1971 //

Members:
* Ilene Rappaport [Lauren Wood] (vocals, guitar, harmonica),
* Ilene Novog [aka Novi Novog] (vocals, viola, harpsichord),
* Mickey Kapner (guitar, sitar, organ, vocals),
* Ernie Eremita (bass, vocals),
* Clifford Mandell (percussion, vocals)

Related Artists: Chunky, Novi & Ernie

Tracks:
01. Oh Gosh (Running Through the Forest)
02. Two Blind Sisters
03. David & Sally
04. Love
05. Endless Trip
06. Better Dead Than Red
07. All These Ties
08. What Do You Think of the War?
09. Ma-Ma 10. Ghost

Here are many odd things about the sole release from Rebecca and the Sunnybrook Farmers. First of all, the album was recorded in one weekend. The band drove up to New York from their hometown of Pittsburgh, recorded the album, and went home. Secondly, the album's label, Musicor Records, was primarily a country label. The only other hippie band on the label was the equally obscure Tingling Mothers Circus. Third, the bluegrass sounding band name; while hippies often DO have farms (especially indoor ones), the band name is hardly an indicator of the freakiness present on the album. And that's just the beginning: there are two Ilenes in the band (although one is really Lauren Wood), no one is actually named Rebecca, there is a violin player, and the band is nearly eclectic to a fault. And yet, the album holds together under the weight of all this strangeness, managing to deliver a solid set of songs that are enthsuiastically and imaginatively played
Side One is especially strong. "Two Blind Sisters" is a beautiful, baroque tearjerker, "Endless Trip" is a nice slice of West Coast pop, and "David and Sally" fairly represents the band's kooky, old-world side. Side two veers away from pop, with only slightly less success. "Better Dead than Red" starts off innocuously enough in a reflective, soft-psych mode, only to explode into a barrage of gunfire sound effects, whistles, and cacophonous drumming.
If you can track down a copy, I highly recommended this album, especially the songs composed and sung by Lauren Wood, a gifted songwriter who still plays to this day.

Sarofeen & Smoke - Sarofeen & Smoke (us 1970)

Sarofeen and Smoke - Sarofeen and Smoke (us 1970)

Sarofeen's vocal style has been compared to Janis Joplin, Ellen McIllwaine, & the Shocking Blue's (recently deceased) Mariska Veres, and if you like those vocalists you should give her a chance. Even if you don't like that heavy, bluesy 60's female vocal style you should still give it a try. Sarofeen & John Martin (especially the latter) wrote some excellent material for the album and the band (listed below) is strong:

Members:
Dave Arliss - bass
John "Zilch" Martin - keyboards, harmonica, guitar
Anne Sarofeen - vocals
Ed "Duke" Shanahan - lead guitar
Jim Watts - drums, pecussion
Anonymous - horns

Tracklist:
Side 1
01. Susan Jane (John Martin) - 2:23
02. Cream of Nowhere (Dave Arliss - Anne Sarofeen) - 2:10
03. It's Love (John Martin) - 3:58
04. Lady Tragedy (John Martin - Anne Sarofeen) - 3:35
05. Swamp Man (Martha Velez - Bellinger) -2:15
Side 2
06. You Make It So Hard (John Martin - Anne Sarofeen) - 2:40
07. Witch (John Martin) - 2:48
08. Tomorrow ( Anne Sarofeen) - 4:03
09. Rocky Mountain Blues (F. Haywood - M. Tucker) - 4:40

Anne Sarofeen also performed on broadway in A Hard Job Being God and later recorded a second album (sans Smoke) entitled Love In A Woman's Heart, which I didn't find as good as this release. Smoke (& Sarofeen presumably) were originally from Auburn, NY, and at least one member of the band, guitarist Ed "Duke" Shanahan continues to perform in that area. He also recordedd with the band Siddhartha (for RCA) in the year before this release and has performed with blues and r&b legends like Muddy Waters, James Cotton, Bobby Comstock, & Bo Diddley.

Magic Mixture - This Is the Magic Mixture (uk 1968 Psych Folk Rock)

Formed: United Kingdom

Tracklist:

08. 2:55 When I was young
09. 2:24 Hey little girl
10. 3:20 Tomorrow's sun
11. 2:33 Motor bike song
12. 4:02 Moon beams

One of the rarest and most pricey Saga albums, the Magic Mixture LP is quite pleasing psychedelia in the style of early Soft Machine or the trippy side of Syd era Floyd - pumping electric organ all the way with searing bursts of fuzz guitar in the right places. While none of the tracks stand out as classics, it's not a bad effort at all and you can easily see why this record is much prized in psyche circles - 'Moonbeams' having cropped up as a bonus cut on one of the early Rubble series. However, the real peach is 'Motor Bike Song', and odd-ode to the iron horse, sung with tongue firmly in cheek in a cyderdelic accent, that pops up just in time to break up the all-too-serious freak-out.

Reissue of excellent early 70s Japanese hard rock with blues edge featuring fantastic vocals, songs and guitarwork. A classic in the genre.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Often touted as the Japanese Black Sabbath by blowhards and those who’ve not actually heard the music, the excellently named Too Much hailed from the large city port of Kobe, where the band members grew up sucking in all kinds of western influences from the LPs and 7” singles that came in on the boats. One of the band – guitarist Junio Nakahara – had spent the late ‘60s in the blues group The Helpful Soul, whose sole LP features in this book’s Top 50 on account of its deeply inspired 10-minutes plus plodathon ‘Peace For Fools’.However, as its audience could never have perceived The Helpful Soul as anything more than another Group Sounds act, guitarist Nakahara decided to jump on the burgeoning New Rock bandwagon by forming the more appropriately named Too Much.Nakahara’s inspiration came from the TOO MUCH concert that The Helpful Soul played with the newly-formed Blues Creation, in Kyoto at the end of February 1970.The hippy phrase ‘too much’ was already utterly cliched in the West by this time, but it was iconic and easily pronounceable to Japanese. In the process, Nakahara hooked up with hard rock singer Juni Lush, changed his own name to the more substantially New Rock-sounding Tsomu Ogawa(!), and dragged high school mates Hideya Kobayashi and Masayuki Aoki along as the rhythm section. They signed a deal with Atlantic Records in the summer of 1970, and wrote a whole slew of mindless proto-metal anthems, including the excellent ‘Grease It Out’, ‘Love Is You’ and ‘Gonna Take You’.These were duly recorded and sounded mindlessly, monolithically, perfectly suited to the lowbrow audience Too Much was aiming to please.Unfortunately, the Atlantic businessmen saw in the be-afro’d Juni Lush another potential star in the mould of Flower Travellin’ Band’s Joe Yamanaka, and they pressured the band into adding several mawkishly sentimetal ballads to the debut LP in order to widen their audience. The results were disastrous. No one needed yet another version of Bobby Dylan’s ‘I Shall Be Released’, particularly the Nipponashville abortion that Too Much delivered. Hey, but neither did they require ‘Song For My Lady’, the arduously phlegmatic 12-minute album closer which arrived replete with megastring sections, Michel LaGrande pianos, Moody Blues flute solos and nere a six-string razor in sight.Too Much was just not enough, and they split soon after the album was released...

Short Biography:
San Ul Lim is Korean and means "the rumbling of a mountain". This band began their musical life as a hobby roughly around 1976 because the members were only college students who love and play rock music. The three members are real brothers. A big hit of their first album, however, enabled them to continue their recordings through the late 70s to the early 80s. But two of the brothers left the music business to pursue their careers. Only the eldest, Chang Wan Kim, was left to remain as "San Ul Lim" from the mid 80s.

Led by singer Fred Cole, who had formerly been in the Northwest punk band the Weeds, the Lollipop Shoppe's sole album (from 1968) ranks as one of the better psych-punk LPs, and also as one of the better one-shot rock records of the late '60s. Featuring Cole's choked, bitter phrasing, the group staked out the middle ground between the Seeds (who shared the same manager) and Love, with a bit of fellow L.A. psych-punkers the Music Machine thrown in. If comparisons must be made, they were definitely closer in tone to Love than the Seeds, with a mixture of raunch and reflection in the spirit of Arthur Lee. Cole was one of the few psychedelic performers to make a contribution during the punk era, surfacing in the Portland punk band the Rats in the late '70s.

The Lollipop Shoppe were a 1960s psychedelic garage rock band. They were originally known as The Weeds and featured Fred Cole, now of Dead Moon. After The Weeds signed to UNI Records (a now-defunct subsidiary of MCA), their new manager, "Lord" Tim Hudson, insisted they change their name to The Lollipop Shoppe to fit in with the current trend of bubblegum music. The band's actual recordings, including the 1968 LP Just Colour, are hardly bubblegum, but instead a mix of garage rock and psychedelia. The album and its single, "You Must Be a Witch," are regarded as period classics and still prized by collectors, though neither made the charts. The band opened for stars such as Janis Joplin and The Doors, and appeared in the biker movie Angels from Hell. The album has been bootlegged; the Music Maniac label has announced a reissue but it has not appeared. The Lollipop Shoppe released one more single, "Someone I Knew" b/w "Through My Window", before breaking up in 1969. They reunited as The Weeds for a 1971 single.

After singer/songwriter Paul Williams landed one of his songs on the flip side of Tiny Tim's "Tip Toe Thru The Tulips", he was approached by record producer Richard Perry with an offer to cut his own album. It was a giant step for Williams, who had just lost his job at the White Whale label a year earlier, an event that left him distraught and sour on the music industry. Apprehensive about going it alone,he formed a band with ex-Jefferson Airplane bassist Bob Harvey, guitarist George Hiller, flautist Cynthia Fitzpatrick, ex-Turtle drummer Don Murray and Williams' brother Ralph on guitar. Dubbed the Holy Mackerel, the band recorded it's psychedelic pop debut throughout the spring of 1968. Before the record's completion, Harvey left and was replaced by future Elvis Presley bassist Jerry Scheff, and then drummer Don Murray was replaced by Michael Cannon. The record appeared in November of 1968 and despite being a Billboard magazine "Special Merit Pick", it went nowhere and the Holy Mackerel called it quits soon after. Williams began his successful solo career a year later.

SWEET SMOKE were a 70’s Progressive Rock band who spent more time in Europe than in the Continental US. Along the way they managed to bump into Conny Plank who Co- engineered this album with Klaus Lohmer. SWEET SMOKE combine fusion jazz elements (aka Miles Davis) with German Krautrock elements and with the addition of flute and sax gives a Canterbury feel as well. Vocals are present and quite psychedelic sounding actually at times with some banter and chanting going on. This album is essentially 2 long epic tracks oscillating between blues, jazz, rock, funk and psychedelia. Band was Andrew Dershin (bass), Jay Dorfman (drums and percussion), Marvin Kaminowitz (solo guitar, vocals), Michael Paris (Tenor sax, alto recorder, vocals, percussion), Steve Rosenstein (rhythm guitar, vocals). With the length of the 2 tracks there is lots of room for exploration and an almost improvised feel to the movements. On track 2 “Baby Night” there is a simply killer percussion solo which sounds like solar drums and will absolutely blow your mind. This is truly awesome music and is heavily recommended to lovers of prog-psych rock.

06. Living On The Hill 14:13
07. Rainbow Song 3:49

For all you crazy collectors out there: There exists two versions of this fine Danish psych/progressive classic: One (the one many connisseurs considers the best) recorded with singer Lars Bisgaard and released late 1970. When Allan Mortensen replaced Bisgaard in December 1970 four new tracks were laid down, while Mortensen recorded new vocals for the remaining three tracks. This version was released in February 1971. So in essence we're talking two different albums, though of course there are plenty of similarities. To confuse matters further the albums were released with identical sleeves and on the same label with the same number: Sonet 1523. So you have to open the gatefold to find out which version you've got. Just to set the record straight: My copy is version 2 with Mortensen singing; as he possesses a fine gospel-tinged voice I find it quite good though I definitely would like to hear the other version someday just to compare. If you can get a hold of the fine twofer Rainbow Band / Midnight Sun (from 1979) you get both the albums in one go! Later in 1971 the group changed its name to Midnight Sun as they got into trouble with a Canadian band also calling themselves Rainbow Band - alas, the latter had copyrighted the name! As such they recorded two fine albums bordering on jazz-fusion with yet another singer by the name of Frank Lauridsen. This band I saw several times as the group's very accomplished guitar-player Peer Frost was quite a hero on the early 70's Danish music-scene.

Morning Dew's 1967 self-titled LP has a distinct sound; it was the beginning of the psychedelic phase of rock music. And that is firmly in place on the record. According to the back cover of the LP it was released in 1971 on Big Seven Music. There are moments of a heavier metal sound, but very few. The peace, flowers, and summer of love influence abounds throughout most of this record. Check out the cover, this couple looks as though like they are frolicking in the fields of Woodstock. It's all very good rock music; in fact, this is a solid album without one throw-away on the entire recording. The musical style remains consistent throughout with the exception of one surprise, the closing track "Epic: The Mann/Death Is A Dream," which starts off with a Spanish flamenco guitar and then launches into one of their rockers, it's a step away from the norm and a nice change showing how the band was talented enough to go into an entirely different direction. For the most part the folk, rock, and psychedelic sounds are what dominate this record, and a nice balance is managed with male and female vocals taking turns. It's a great album!!! (review by Keith Hannaleck from progressiveword.net).

Aug.1969 Bob Gallo’s Talentmaster Recording Studio- New York City, New York

With a line up of Mal Robinson-lead guitar and lead vocals; Don Sligar-Drums; Don Anderson-rhythm guitar and keyboards; and Blair Honeyman-bass guitar and vocals the band entered the studio in New York to record the Roulette album. The recording consisted of  ten songs and the tracks were completed in about 30 hours with many songs using one take.  Lee DeCarlo was the recording engineer(who’s claim to fame was the engineer on the U.S. mix for Jumpin Jack Flash by the Rolling Stones) and Fred Munao was the Producer. This represented Munao’s first major project with Roulette, having previously worked with The Left Banke for another label. Songs included in the session were: “Something You Say”, “Then Came the Light”, “Cherry Street”, and “Young Man” previously recorded at Fairyland Studio and new additions to their sound “Crusader’s Smile”, “Upon Leaving”, “The Gypsy”, “Country Boy Blue”, “Save Me”, and “The Mann”/”Death is a Dream”.  All songs were written by Mal Robinson with the exception of “Save Me” which was co-written with Kerry Livgren of the band Kansas. Don Sligar and Mal Robinson had known Livgren playing in local bands and attending the local university. At the time the song was written, Livgren and Sligar were good friends and living together with several other musicians in Topeka.  Although the album’s main focus is the psychedelic rock sound, several easier listening songs are included.  Interestingly, Roulette leaned to wanting to use the easier listening sounds of “Country Boy Blue” and “Something You Say” for potential singles with the label. No singles were ever released and for some unknown reason the album did not get released until one year later in August, 1970.

Laghonia "Etcetera" CD reissue of excellent early 70s South American psychedelic progressive rock. More progressive than their "Glue" album this one takes more chances, but both albums are considered classics in the genre. "The band improved their songwriting, got more complex, and remind sometimes of early Jethro Tull, King Crimson music, sometimes progressive, sometimes folky or mystic, but always intense and catchy, excellent fuzz and wah-wah guitars, magic Hammond B-2 organ and a variety of rhythms, all English lyrics."
Peruvian outfit's album originally released in 1971, the album showed the bands songwriting getting more complex and is similar at times to early Jethro Tull, King Crimson etc, sometimes progressive, sometimes folky or esotheric, but always intense and catchy. English lyrics, excellent fuzz and wah-wah guitars, magic Hammond B-2 organ and a variety of rhythms. It comes with outstanding original artwork, a true psychedelic painting by M. Cornejo.

This compilation was relased in 1999 on the Technicolor Dream label (Technicolor Dream Records 001). It's mainly psychedelic-pop on the menu (and NOT that stupid Toytown-Pop that some labels/dealers want to sell you as psychedelic), and if you're a fan of that music you won't be disappointed.

Every Which Way - Every Which Way (uk 1970)

Every Which Way - Every Which Way (uk 1970)

Formed: May 1970 , United Kingdom
Disbanded: 1971

Members:
Graham Bell (keyboards, lead vocals), (SKIP BIFFERTY)
Alan Cartwright (bass), (PROCOL HURUM)
Geoff Peach (reeds, flute, backing vocals),
Brian Davison (drums, percussion), (THE NICE)
John Hedley (guitar).

Related Artists: The Nice, Refugee

Biography:
Every Which Way was formed by drummer Brian Davison (ex The Nice) in May 1970. After a debut album, Every Which Way, and a presentation at The Marquee, the band split up.
1 LP " Every Which Way " 1970 (PHILLIPS)

Tracks:
01 Bed Ain't What It Used to Be 9:27
02 Castle Sand 6:41
03 Go Placidly 3:50
04 All in Time 8:50
05 What You Like 3:40
06 The Light 6:14

It shouldn't be necessary to inform you about whom of The Nice' ex-members that got the most successful career after the disbanding of that group. However, both Lee Jackson and Brian Davison started their own bands, but without any noticeable success. Jackson formed Jackson Heights that were able to make as much as four albums. Davison's new group Every Which Way lasted on the other hand for only one record, and that's really not much to be sad about if the music on this album was the best they had to offer. Musically it reminds me of a jazzier and more progressive version of Gordon Haskell's "It Is and It Isn't" album, but without the good melodies. Most of the songs are stretched out by lots of tedious soloing on saxophone from Geoffrey Peach, and Graham Bell's vocal delivery sounds depressing, lacking dynamics and range. The pace of the album is slow and laid-back, rarely firing up much excitement or energy. "The Light" has got a quite good sax-riff that is used sparsely and intelligent, but unfortunately gets lost in the tedium of the rest of the song. The only track that I really care for here is "Castle Sand". This mellow and fine song has got Peach' flute floating gently around it, and the melody is one of the few memorable ones on the album. "Go Placidly" also has some good tendencies in the melodic department, but several boring aspects about it too. You should rather check out Refugee's album from 1974 instead if you want the best thing that Davison were involved in after The Nice.

A German band, Kannibal Komix included an italian member (Jurgen Drews, Gerd Muller and Bernd Scheffler were German, bass player Enrico Lombardi was from Piacenza), and had some notoriety following an appearance in german and english TV shows. Their Lp Kannibal Komix was released in 1968 in Germany, and later chosen by the US filmmaker George Moorse as soundtrack for his film "The House In White". The Lp was hence issued in the USA on Colossus in 1970 and in Italy by Saint Martin in 1971 with a single cover.Housed in a distinctive cover (with a nude woman riding a horse), the Lp is still influenced by a late 60's UK psych/pop style, with 12 short tracks, and has no connections at all with the italian 70's progressive style.

ALBUM: 1(A) THE ADVANCEMENT (Philips PHS 600-328) 1969 R1

After collaborating with Gabor Szabo on such superb efforts as More Sorcery and Dreams, bassist Louis Kabok and drummer Hal Gordon further embraced jazz-rock fusion under the Advancement aegis, issuing their sole LP in 1969. The opening "Juliet" establishes a dark, moody atmosphere immediately bolstered by the intriguing "Painful Struggle," with its eerie vibes and Kabok's extended bass bridge. "Moorish Mode" is Gordon's star turn, highlighted by an impressively restrained drum break. But it's the most overtly rock-influenced cuts that make Advancement worth seeking out, in particular "Fall Out," an impressively heady mTlange of jazz, hard rock, and psychedelia.

All the songs on the album were written by R. Wegrzyn. It's really pretty mediocre, the most psychedelic thing about it being the cover.

2nd release from CAMEL which I would rank as one of my favorites from their discography. Heavily rooted in their classic sound, "Mirage" is a great exploration into CAMEL's soft instrumental passages and sonic harmonies. There are not any thunderous crashes or loud bangs on "Mirage" which instead work on warm and soothing space textures. The classic CAMEL line up is present (Bardens, Ward, Latimer and Ferguson) who perform to their best standard! "Mirage" contains 2 epic tracks ("Nimrodel The Procession The White Rider" and "Lady Fantasy") which are given lots of space to explore a fine range of dimly lit moods and melodies.
Song are superbly crafted and contain some of CAMEL's most treasured musical moments.

Members:
Gary Young (lead vocals),

ALBUM: 1(A) CREATION OF SUNLIGHT (Windi ST 1001-1002) 1968 R4
NB: (1) reissued on CD (Mystic 7) 1997 and again 2000. 45: 1 David/The Fun Machine (Windi 1006) 196?

Tracks:
01 - David
02 - Hammonds Eggs
03 - In The Middle Of Happy
04 - Light Without Heat
05 - Rush Hour Blues
06 - Second Thoughts
07 - Seven Times Infinity
08 - Sometimes A Woman
09 - Colors Of Love
10 - The Fun Machine

Despite the reissues many are still unfamiliar with this Sunset Strip-style psych wonderama, so full of 60s summer charm you'll play it over and over. Strawberry Alarmclock's first two LPs are the obvious reference for these guys and they pull it off with equal talent and class, not a dull moment. The perfect summer album. With harmonies to die for, colorful arrangements that highlight great organ and guitar playing, Creation of Sunlight - Creation of Sunlight (Windi ST 1001-1002) 1968 R4 and, most of all, an album full of hit-worthy songs, this is an all-time classic. Like the similar SAC, at times the oh-so-happy sound veers towards the cheesy, but never quite pushes it too far. Instantly memorable, but also with a lot of depth. Every song is a winner. In a better world they would have been superstars.
A very rare Southern California pop/psych album with dual organ, fuzz and sunshine vibes similar to Strawberry Alarm Clock. The band were previously known as Sunlights Seven and recorded an unreleased, acetate-only album in Hollywood: Sunstroke, circa 1967. Their repertoire largely comprised of early versions of songs re-recorded for the Creation Of Sunlight album. (Vernon Joynson/Stephane Rebeschini/Clark Faville)

Psycheground Group - Psycheground (Italy 1970)

The Psycheground Group - Psycheground (Lupus LUS 207 - 1970) Italy

tracklist:
01. Psycheground (8:08)
02. Easy (7:21)
03. Traffic (6:00)
04. Ray (3:02)
05. Tube (7:35)

The Psycheground Group was an obscure progressive rock group from Italy, so obscure in fact that their exact makeup is not entirely known. Supposedly members of Nuova Idea and keyboardist Vince Tempera were members, but I just pulled that information from a random website. Nevertheless, they released this album in 1970 containing five instrumental tracks that span prog and psych while maintaining a funky jazz type of vibe. The standout cut is "Easy," an absolutely nasty exercise in funky drumming, hammond organ, guitar, and bass. The first time I heard this I seriously couldn't believe my ears. Now it's a top want of mine, and with only a supposed 50 copies produced, I know it's gonna be a tough hunt.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
A sweet psychedelic set, but one with very mysterious origins -- originally recorded as a sound library session, by a group that was really the better-known Nuova Idea! The album's definitely got a vibe that fits its sound library roots -- all instrumental, with a bit less bravado than most psyche albums of this type -- almost more of a focus on the rhythms, which stretch out strongly amidst the Hammond and guitar solos on the set. The whole thing's still pretty rockish, but also has a deeper sensitivity to the overall sound too -- a quality that's partly due to production efforts of Giampiero Reverberi. Affinity was a short-lived band that released one album and one single in 1970 and then spilt up. Their music is a blend of blues, jazz-rock and progressive rock with lots of nice Hammond organ. The band had a fantastic female vocalist in Linda Hoyle. Affinity started writing for a second album, but in January 1971 Linda left the band and that was the end for the whole band.
Issued in 1970, their only album shows much variety as well as plenty of soloing. As the excellent sound, musicianship and production will attest, it is a superb achievement for the times. The material on the album is quite strong all the way through. "I Am and So Are You" and "Three Sister" do both use horns to good effect. "Mr. Joy" is a relaxed and excellent jazzy track, while "Night Flight" is a more typical early 70's progressive rock track. There are two excellent cover versions here too. You would may not expect much from a cover of The Everly Brother's "I Wonder If I Care As Much", but its sounds awesome with a incredible symphonic and great arrangement. And their 11-minute version of "All Along the Watchtower" is a irresistible Hammond-orgy you must hear to believe.
Another memorable cover shot by Marcus Keef. This one radiates calm and peace and is more or less the antipode to the Black Sabbath cover. The lady relaxedly observes the foraging swans, both the masonry at her back and the parasol serve to make her look very protected and cosy. The overall turquoise tinting works wonders too. Inside the musicians pose very aesthetically in grey-blue and silver. No less than seven positive reviews from the tabloids are displayed.

A2 Guess I'm Falling in Love 4:18
A3 I'm Waiting for the Man 5:24
A4 Run Run Run 6:55
B1 Sister Ray 18:55

The Gymnasium bootleg is reminiscent of The Velvet Underground & Nico acetate that inspired an online bidding frenzy in 2006. Found by collector Warren Hill in 2002 as he flipped through some fire-damaged LPs in Chelsea, New York, the acetate contained songs from the famous album of the same name, easily recognizable by the peelable banana by iconic artist Andy Warhol on the cover. That album was released in 1967, but the acetate is thought to contain earlier recordings. According to RealityStudio.org, the acetate contains previously unheard versions of the songs recorded in April of 1966 at Scepter Studios.
The Velvet Underground & Nico acetate eventually sold for $155,401 on eBay, shattering the previously held record for the most expensive LP to be sold on the site. Many fans hoped the album’s discovery and sale might mean they could eventually buy a copy of the album themselves, but legal disputes concerning ownership of the material have so far prevented this from happening.
Some doubts have been raised by fans and critics concerning the newly discovered recording’s rarity and authenticity. Pitchfork reports that the song “I’m Not A Young Man Anywhere” was in fact performed on April 30, 1967, which could be the version heard on the album. Furthermore, many fans insist the album sounds more like the work of a top-notch cover band than the actual Velvets itself.

Debut album, originally released by Island, 1969. "Ireland's answer to the Incredible String Band, Dr. Strangely Strange engaged in the same type of psychedelic acoustic music with folksy arrangements. With traditional instruments like penny whistle, fiddle, harmonium, and mandolin, Dr. Strangely Strange was more solidly rooted in melody and structure than the group's flaky Scottish counterparts. Produced by British modern folk guru Joe Boyd (Fairport Convention, Incredible String Band), Kip of the Serenes is built around simple and repetitious melodies occasionally interrupted by stream-of-consciousness musical and lyrical diversions."This simplistic approach would be abandoned with their 1970 follow-up, Heavy Petting, which saw their first partnership with electric guitarist Gary Moore.

Pepper Tree hailed from Nova Scotia and was formed in 1967. After a few years of saturating the club scene in Canada, the band finally landed a contract with Capitol Records in 1969. Producer, Jack Richardson, was drafted to produce a single which saw the band charting in their native country. Lineup changes ensued over the next year, until "You're My People" hit store shelves in 1971.
The album was a solid mix of folk, pop, prog and organ driven hard rock. With stellar harmonies and a real wealth of musical diversity, the album seemed poised for success, but for one reason or another that never came to pass. More lineup changes took place over the next two years with Capitol issuing numerous failed singles. By 1973, the band was belly up and members went on to such bands as Rhinegold, Molly Oliver, Hanover Fist, Wrabit, Lee Aaron, Chilliwack and Headpins. Many of them are still active in both performing and producing music.
Dig this relic of a bygone era that still commands the interest of collectors and aficionados worldwide. This stuff is fabulous and you'll be pleasantly surprised with what you hear :)

The American Metaphysical Circus is a landmark psychedelic recording of the late 1960's, largely unparalleled in having remained in print for nearly 20 years. It was recorded by Joseph "Joe" Byrd after his departure from the band The United States Of America, and featured some of the earliest recorded work in rock music utilizing extensive use of synthesizers and vocoder, along with an extended group of West Coast studio musicians he named as Joe Byrd and the
Field Hippies.

It has become a popular and oft-repeated misconception, with the more recent revival of interest in The United States of America, that The American Metaphysical Circus was not as popular or a commercial success, whereas factual information discussed by Byrd surrounding the Napster case and the experience of American record enthusiasts confirms exactly the opposite.
Prior to its re-release, mint vinyl copies of The American Metaphysical Circus were sold by collectors for prices sometimes in excess of $100US, and the both the original 1969 issue and 1996 CD still command premium prices on collector Web sites. Atlantis Records described the 1999 re-release as "sought after 60's American Psych/Electronic rock classic from United States of American mainman Joseph Byrd" . Gatefold Records offered "Welcome re-issue of the 1969 followup to the United States of America album (Joe Byrd was the leader of that group). Trippy Moog and electronics noodling mixed with stunning bursts of fuzzed out guitars and acid-damaged lyrics"...

With the return of Gary Duncan and the recording debut of founder Dino Valenti, Just for Love, Quicksilver's fourth album, marked their debut as the band they were intended to be. The ironic thing about that is that, led by singer/songwriter Valenti, they were a much more pop-oriented band than their fans had come to expect. On Just for Love, Quicksilver finally was Valenti's backup group (he wrote all but one of the songs), and while this gave them greater coherence and accessibility, as well as their only Top 50 single in "Fresh Air," it also made them less the boogie band they had been. And it meant the band's days were numbered.
~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

Notes:
Of all the bands that came out of the San Francisco area during the late 60s Quicksilver typified most the style, attitude and sound of that era.
Anyone familiar with the 60's in San Francisco should remember these guys. A few are no longer with us, but a few are still here making music. I've always been a fan of Nicky Hopkins and this album is a classic. Sometimes self-indulgent, but always in a nice way. The cover art is bright and has that certain 60's feel. The players are depicted with exotic instruments of unknown origin in a lush setting. Ahh, those were the days...

Robbie Basho - Venus In Cancer (us 1969)

Born: August 30, 1940 , Baltimore, MD, United States
Died: February 1986 // Berkeley, CA, United States

Also Known As: Daniel Robert Robinson, Jr.

Genres: folk, experimental

Track Listing :
01. Venus In Cancer
02. Eagle Sails The Blue Diamond Waters
03. Kowaka D'Amour
04. Song For The Queen
05. Cathedrals Et Fleur De Lis
06. Wine Song (Sweet Wine Of Love)

Robbie Basho is a little known guitarist whose masterful recordings defy most attempts at description. His music is simultaneously primitive and elevated with an almost spiritual quality permeating each phrase and melody. Basho's myriad influences consist of many world musics, from eastern ragas to japanese koto music to western art music to meditative west-african kora pieces. His use of esoteric (and usually self-devised) alternate tunings as well as a 12-stringed guitar is crucial to his unique sound. This rare album is definitely worth downloading.

Read Pitchfork review here:

Robbie Basho released Venus in Cancer in 1969 on the Blue Thumb label. After five albums for the Takoma label in the 60's, Basho had cemented his reputation alongside John Fahey and Leo Kottke as one of the most brilliant guitarists of his generation. His wide range of musical influences from around the globe set him apart from other blues-based players, incorporating Arabic, Himalayan and Indian themes; Japanese and Chinese scales, and classical and European folk music. All are on magnificent display on this sprawling, spiritually-charged album.
Released on CD for the very first time, the album has been remastered from the original tapes. The package includes original album artwork and new appreciations from Windham Hill label founder Will Ackerman, Basho college friend and fellow Takoma recording artist Max Ochs, German guitarist Steffen Basho-Junghans, and Pete Townshend of The Who.
Twenty years since his death in 1986, Basho's legend continues to grow, having strongly influenced a new generation of guitarists including Jack Rose, Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance) and James Blackshaw, among many others.
The first ever live recording by Robbie Basho, a version of "Kowaka D'Amour" from Venus in Cancer, can be found on Tompkins Square's recent compilation, Imaginational Anthem, Vol. 2.
